All throughout Asia, night markets are famous, from the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar in Thailand to the Donghuamen Night Market in Beijing, China. Night markets are not only a place to taste a variety of local delicacies, but also an occasion to foster a community and celebrate culture with your friends and families.

At the Asia Collective Night Market, over 40 local vendors will present their best Asian cuisine and special dishes for you! The event will also feature music, performances, merchandise, and family friendly activities.

Find the Baltimore Changwon Sister City Committee (BCSCC) table in the nonprofit section at booth E7. They will be hosting a craft session from 2:00-6:00pm, where you can create your own Korean-inspired paper fan.

Find the Baltimore Kawasaki Sister City Committee (BKSCC) table at booth E10. Fumiko Campbell will be showing her Origami arts, Misako Aoki her Japanese tea tasting and Yoshitaka Fujii his ceramic arts from 2:00-6:00pm.

Baltimore Kawasaki Sister City Updates

On Sept. 30th, BKSCC supported a Butoh workshop  led by Azumi Oe, a Japanese professional Butoh dancer, held at Peabody Institute’s Dance Program. Over 30 dance students participated in an introduction to this modern Japanese dance form that came from a desire to break free from strict traditional forms. Several members watched as Oe-san put the dance students through some unusual and fascinating exercises.

On Oct. 2nd, BKSCC participated in Japan Day held in Columbia, co-chaired by our member Misako Aoki, and created/organized by the MD-Kanagawa Sister State Committee. Japan Day was an afternoon of Japanese performances, arts, and foods, including Misako Ballet and Matcha Time Cafe, and tables with many various community groups. Participants were encouraged to come in their favorite Anime character’s costumes and our members met the challenge! We had a great afternoon talking with many of the over 200 participants, meeting some new friends and (hopefully) members.

On Oct. 13th, BKSCC supported a Calligraphy Performance by Setsuhi Shiraishi at Peabody Heights Brewery in Charles Village, produced by our member Michael Young. A group of members enjoyed the performance in a crowd of over 120 people who watched Setsuhi and enjoyed local brews. Setsuhi was accompanied by another friend of the BKSCC committee, Hideo Sekino, on a shakuhachi wooden flute.
