Award-winning author, chef, television personality, and Mediterranean diet advocate Amy Riolo will share the secrets of culinary medicine while gourmet chef entrepreneur Aida Mady will introduce you to the world of Egyptian spices and cuisine. Evening includes presentation/demonstrations, pastries and cookbooks to take home, and a silent auction to benefit Baltimore Luxor Alexandria Sister City Committee. PLUS treats from Koshary by Misteka and Fava Pot.

Baltimore Sister Cities Holiday Party (Jan 10, 2020)

We held our annual meeting and holiday party at Baltimore City Hall on January 10, 2020. We had fun looking back on a great year of accomplishments with our members and friends!

Nov 8 / Baltimore + Changwon Sister City Celebration

Come and join us as we celebrate the signing of the new Baltimore and Changwon Sister City Agreement. Changwon in South Korea is Baltimore’s newest sister city relationship!

Event features:

Performance by Changwon Municipal Dance Company Troupe (18 dancers). Roh Hyun Sik is the artistic director & choreographer for this company. He is known for his ability to create dynamic and modernistic performances while maintaining the philosophy of Korean dancing, and also his role in expanding the spectrum of Korean dancing.

Persimmon-themed tasting event. Changwon is the first place where persimmons were grown in Korea, and it is also the largest persimmon plantation in the country. Changwon is bringing products made of persimmons to Baltimore to introduce us to their the sweet taste.

Sep 21 / Charm City Night Market

Food stalls, live performances, artists, and makers — an Asian-style night market experience! One of Baltimore’s largest one-night celebrations. The Charm City Night Market is a tribute to what used to be Baltimore’s Chinatown and a promise of what it could be again. This is the 2nd annual edition of this night-time festival.

Event organized by the Chinatown Collective: “The Chinatown Collective is a coming together of Baltimore’s pan-Asian community – across ethnicity, across industry, and across generations. We are artists. We are chefs. We are filmmakers. We are experimenters. We are advocates for all people of color. We are residents of Baltimore City who believe that investment begins with action.”

Supported by Baltimore-Changwon, Baltimore-Kawasaki, and Baltimore-Xiamen Sister City Committees.

July 9 – Aug 23 / Japanese-American art exhibit at city hall

“Flightless Cranes/Tobenai Tsuru” Art Exhibit

Location: Baltimore City Hall’s North Gallery, 100 N. Holliday St, Baltimore, MD 21202
Title: Flightless Cranes/Tobenai Tsuru (meaning: “a crane cannot fly”)
Curator: Kirk Butts
Artists: Aimi Chinen Bouillen, Ahraun Chambliss, Mary Champagne, Kei Ito, Sanzi Kermes, and Ayaka Takao.
Opening reception: Tuesday July 9, 6:30pm, Baltimore City Hall Rotunda.
Exhibit dates: July 9 – August 23
Admission: Free (bring your photo ID in order to enter the building)

The exhibit celebrates the 40th year anniversary of Baltimore and Kawasaki’s sister city relationship. This exhibit will open just before Baltimore’s ArtScape festival on July 2 and runs through August 23. It showcases 6 young Japanese, American, and Japanese-American artists, looking for commonalities in their immigrant identity and relocation themes that are part of their artistic heritage. The artists include several members of Baltimore Kawasaki Sister City Committee and other artists both local and national. We welcome you to visit this exhibit during ArtScape and delve into themes that are part of our Sister City fabric in Baltimore.

The Ancient Alexandria Library – Anew for the 21st Century

Alexandria, Egypt, was a world center of knowledge and learning in the third century BCE, when its ancient library gathered scrolls and scholars from around the world. During these events in July 2019, learn how the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) in the 21st century is dedicated to recapturing the spirit of openness and scholarship of the original library.

Speaker: Heba El-Rafey, Director of Public Relations and International Communications at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA). She oversees the BA Youth Activities Program, engaging young Egyptians and connecting with the International Friends of the BA Network. She is in the Baltimore-Washington area July 22 – 25, 2019 and is speaking at the following events.

June 15 / Kawasaki Lantern Commemoration

Commemoration Ceremony to mark 35 years of the Kawasaki stone lantern located by the Maryland Science Center at the Inner Harbor

Date: Saturday, June 15, 2019
Time: 11am
Location: Baltimore Inner Harbor promenade, Rash Field, near the Maryland Science Center

The Kawasaki Stone Lantern is a gift donated to Baltimore by its sister city of Kawasaki, Japan. It was installed with much fanfare 35 years ago in June 1984 in the Inner Harbor when Mayor William Donald Schaeffer welcomed a delegation from japan and presided over city-wide festivities.

Learn about the lantern’s history, why it is a masterful example of Japan’s Kasuga style, and the upcoming plans for its relocation.

Ceremony will include speeches, procession, lantern lighting, and Japanese drumming and dance performances. Program includes:

  • Taiko Drumming Salute
  • Welcome by Co-Chairs of Baltimore Kawasaki Sister City Committee
  • Messages sent from Baltimore Mayor Bernard “Jack” Young and Kawasaki Mayor Fukuda
  • Remarks from reps from Waterfront Partnership and Public Arts Exchange; Councilman Ryan Dorsey; Bob Buker; Maryland Cherry Princess
  • Ceremonial Lantern Lighting
  • Japanese Festival Dance by Satoko Kajima Best
  • Taiko Drumming Finale

Visit the Baltimore Sister Cities booth at Artscape, Baltimore’s annual FREE public arts festival — Friday July 21 through Sunday July 23, 2017

During Artscape, the Baltimore Sister Cities organization will have a booth with fun activities for kids, and information about our sister cities around the world. We’re featuring a raffle for a package of great Orioles tickets, too!
